描述.Cosmic rays consist of elementary particles with enormous energy which originate from outside our solar system and constantly hit the Earth’s atmosphere. Where do these cosmic rays originate? How does nature accelerate the cosmic-ray particles to energies with orders of magnitude beyond the limits of manmade particle accelerators? What can we learn by measuring the interactions of the cosmic rays with the atmosphere? Digital radio-antenna arrays offer a promising, complementary measurement method for high-energy cosmic rays. This thesis reports on substantial advances in the development of the radio technique, which will be used to address these questions in future experiments..

Radio Experiments for Air Shower Detection,limited electronics available at that time prevented to exploit the full potential of the radio detection method, and other methods, like the detection of fluorescence or Cherenkov light from air showers, have been more successful.

A Reference Beacon for the Auger Engineering Radio Array,he radio pulse already in individual antennas. An event whose signal-to-noise ratio is so low that it could only be detected with interferometry will not be triggered. Thus, interferometry will not lower the detection threshold of AERA.

Time Calibration of LOPES,us of this chapter is to explain by which methods a relative timing accuracy and precision of ~1?ns can be achieved. However, for pulse arrival time measurements at low signal-to-noise ratios, the uncertainty is dominated by noise and can be much larger than the calibration uncertainty, as it will be discussed in Chap. 6.

Conclusion,h other techniques. This thesis reflects the progress in the understanding of the radio emission and presents a set of methods which improved LOPES and will help to answer the open questions with AERA and LOFAR, the next generation digital radio arrays.
