Ingestive Behaviour and Wing-Flapping in Assessing Welfare of Laying HensIngestive behaviour and wing-flapping in chickens is briefly described and consequences of deprivation of the patterns are discussed. The welfare legislation related to the two behaviour patterns is considered and the legal differentiation between the two behavioural patterns is discussed.

Discussion to quantify the problem. The first requirement is to identify the appropriate signals to look for and the second requirement is to interpret the values obtained in terms of animal welfare. If we can achieve that, we are in a position to identify and rank environmental stressors, in terms of welfare.
