One is within-breed improvement of the native, mainly fat-tailed sheep while the other is the importation of genotypes from other areas to replace or be incorporated into the existing genotypes.

The Awassi Sheep Breeding Project in SyriaThe fat-tailed Awassi is indigenous to West Asia. In Syria it is the main source of milk, meat, and wool, accounting for about 69% of total meat production, 17% of milk production, and 40% of milk products. The value of sheep production is about 25% of total agricultural production.
