Differences between stem and root thickening at their junction in red pine,ng 4 decades analysed. This cyclical pattern was similar in both 1.8 by 1.8 m and 3.6 by 3.6 m spaced trees but was largely absent when crown size was substantially reduced by pruning. The increases and decreases in root thickening relative to the stem were associated with overall decreases and increases respectively in soil moisture deficits.
