Basic Ship Geometry,It is superfluous to say that the first main property of all surface ships is that they float on the water whilst carrying payloads. Consequently the main hull of a ship is basically a watertight box.

Statical Stability at Small Heel Angles,All ships should have adequate stability in all their operating conditions. This statement sounds almost too obvious and simple to deserve a serious consideration, but it raises two important questions: firstly, what is stability; and secondly how do we define ‘a(chǎn)dequate’? We cannot even begin to answer the second until we have answered the former.
