It is characterized by vanishing horizontal density gradients; the surface slope alone determines the horizontal pressure gradients (H1, section 1).. Vertical density gradients can be considered by a barotropic multi-layer model (H1, section 5).

However, even the response of a lake to a few days of wind forcing is often referred to as “circulation”; in this case it means that also wave processes of this time scale have to be included.

Topographic Waves in Lakes,nd quasi-geostrophic waves) was given by Lamb (1932). However, it is only very recently (e.g., see Saylor et al., 1980) that observations and an appropriate theory have been combined to provide a unified account of low-frequency motions in lakes.
