描述Although a few books covering primarily serological aspects of human blood groups are available, it became clear to me in the course of my research that no compendium of the non-serological aspects of human blood group systems exists. This book has been written to facilitate access to the vast number of publications scattered throughout the literature in both chemical and medical journals on the chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology of blood groups. It is designed as a concise survey for use by blood bankers and researchers in biochemistry, blood group serology, immunohaemotology, forensic medicine, population genetics, and anthropology; the text is supplemented by numerous illustrations and tables. This volume encompasses the entire field of blood group serology and provides a comprehensive survey of present knowledge in the field. The serological aspects have been kept to a minimum. I have emphasised the chemical, biochemical and molecular genetic basis of blood group specificity and given full consideration to molecular biology investigations, in particular to those on the structure of blood group genes and the structural basis of alleles and rare blood group variants.

Glycoconjugates,ific protein or oligosaccharide structures. In contrast to proteins, carbohydrates and glycoconjugates are barely (and reluctantly) touched upon in chemistry and biochemistry courses. A brief survey of the structures and properties of this substance class is therefore appropriate here.

ABO(H) System,assify human individuals into four blood groups depending whether one, both, or none of these antigenic characters were present on the cells [228]. He also recognised that the sera of individuals lacking one or both antigens usually contain anti-. and/or anti-. isoagglutinins (see Tab. 5.1).

Serological Characters Located on Glycophorin C and Glycophorin D,ic antigens was identified, of which to date four specificities have been defined — ., ., . [8,33], and . [35]. Only recently has it been recognised that the rare antigens .. (.) [10], . [44], .. [28], and .. [24] are also part of the . system.

Lutheran and Auberger,roducts of antithetical alleles. Genetical studies are not yet able to show whether or not the high-frequency para-. antigens are controlled by the . locus; however, absence of these antigens from .-null cells and localisation on the . glycoproteins (see below) clearly shows their close association with the . system.
