(1) and this might involve the production of hydrogen peroxide (H.O.) by the macrophages. Macrophages release H.O.. when exposed to phagocytic stimuli or certain soluble agents that perturb the plasma membrane (8, 9). H.O. can kill . and resistance to H.O.. correlates with high virulence in the guinea pig (11, 5).
