In turn, the latter compound participates in three essential reactions or sequences: (1) the transsulfuration pathway, which leads to the formation of cystathionine, cysteine, glutathione, and other metabolically important metabolites; (2) the recycling of intracellular folates; and (3) the catabolism of choline and betaine.
