描述Holism and reductionism are traditionally seen as incompatibleviews or approaches to nature. Co-Operation in Island Biogeographys. In doing so, the model not only brought unity to the field but also generated an enormous amount of research. After a phase in which the model was tested, it appeared to be somewhat too simple, however, and research became more focused on seeking out the various causal factors that might underlie the (parameters of the) model.

Epiloguethat wholes cannot be analyzed at all, and reductionists who claim that there are no wholes other than, say, atoms to study. These claims are so absurd, however, that they are not worthy of discussion.

The Distinction Between Habitat and Nichern niche theory is recognized as such. Usually, various niche concepts are being used interchangeably. One of the purposes of the present chapter is to show that the niche concept in modern niche theory is the only adequate niche concept.
