描述.Two specialized new instruments for ESO‘s VLT, VISIR and CRIRES, spawned the idea for this workshop. CRIRES is a dedicated very high resolution infrared spectrograph; VISIR features a high resolution spectroscopic mode. Together, the instruments combine the sensitivity of an 8m-telescope with the now well-established reliability of VLT-facility instruments. High resolution here means that lines in cool stellar atmospheres and H.II.-regions can be resolved. The astrophysical topics discussed in this rather specialized workshop range from the inner solar system to active galactic nuclei. There are many possibilities for new discoveries with these instruments, but the unique capability, which becomes available through high-resolution infrared spectroscopy, is the observation of molecular rotational-vibrational transitions in many astrophysical environments. Particularly interesting and surprising in this context, many papers on modeling and laboratory spectroscopy at the workshop appear to indicate that astronomical observations are lagging a bit behind in this field. Mid Infrared Spectroscopic Standards: Observations and Models,9). This allows us to demonstrate that the derived absolute calibration of the spectra is accurate to better than 5% in most cases. Our subsample of MIR calibration standards presented here shall become the primary calibrators of the VISIR instrument.

Active Galaxies in the Mid Infrared: Ground-Based versus Space-Born Observations, emission is only detected in starbursts whereas PAH features are significantly reduced or completely absent in AGN. We find that the mid-infrared emission of Seyferts is dominated by a compact core while the starbursts are spatially resolved.

CRIRES: Context and Status,in the near infrared. This aspect in fact motivated the organization of this workshop to both explore the scientific prospects and prepare the ESO community for the use of the instrument in the not too distant future. Here I will summarize the main characteristics of the instrument and its development status.

Improving the Accuracy of HCN/HNC Opacity Data and Accounting for Isotopomers,r ab initio counterparts. Thus improving the accuracy of many of the strongest HCN/HNC line frequencies. We propose to generate an approximate H.CN linelist using experimentally determined energy levels of H.CN with our HCN line intensities. Our preliminary results are presented here.
