,‘Individuality’ Before Hegel: Leibniz, Herder, Goethe, Fichte, Schleiermacher, Humboldt, Schlegel,hifting focus to Herder’s friend Goethe, whose literary and scientific efforts hinge on ‘individuality,’ I take up Fichte’s peculiar usage (the individual conceived in society with others), followed by Hegel’s rival Schleiermacher, Wilhelm von Humboldt (he transmitted the category to J.S. Mill), and Friedrich Schlegel (whom Hegel later vilified).
