Polymers with Aromatic Rings in the Chain,it is arguably the simplest of the aromatic ring systems, its investigation has played an important part in the development of heat-resistant polymers. Commercial products based on polyphenylenes have appeared from time to time but have met with only limited success, due in the main to difficulties in fabrication.

Polymers with Heterocyclic Rings in the Chain,these materials involved introducing a degree of tractability into the system. In the case of highly conjugated aromatic polymers, as has already been seen, flexible (hinge) groups—linking the rings—led to increases in both molecular weight and tractability, but almost inevitably this was accompanied by a reduction in thermo-oxidative stability.
