The purpose of this handbook is to definetransportation as a scientific discipline that transcendstransportation technology and methods. Whether by car, truck, airplane- or by a mode of transportation that has not yet beenconceived - transportation obeys fundamental properties. Thescience of transportation defines these properties, and demonstrateshow our knowledge of one mode of transportation can be used to explainthe behavior of another. .Transportation scientists are motivated by the desire to explainspatial interactions that result in movement of people or objects fromplace to place. Its methodologies draw from physics, operationsresearch, probability and control theory. Crew Schedulingd in exactly one subset, and each subset in the partition is assigned to a worker. The workers are interchangeable, so the essence of the problem is to create the best set of subsets that partitions the jobs. In general, there are many constraints on the allowable subsets and subsets must be evaluated for both feasibility and cost.
