描述Knowledge-based systems are increasingly found in a widevariety of settings and this handbook has been written to meet aspecific need in their widening use. While there have been manysuccessful applications of knowledge-based systems, some applicationshave failed because they never received the corrective feedback thatevaluation provides for keeping development focused on the users‘needs in their actual working environment. This handbook provides aconceptual framework and compendium of methods for performingevaluations of knowledge-based systems during their development. Itsfocus is on the users‘ and subject matter experts‘ evaluation of theusefulness of the system, and not on the developers‘ testing of theadequacy of the programming code. The handbook permits evaluators tosystematically answer the following kinds of questions: Does theknowledge-based system meet the users‘ task requirements? Is thesystem easy to use? Is the knowledge base logically consistent? Doesit meet the required level of expertise?
