Howard Elmanare cardinals then the sum .+ . of . and . is defined to be the cardinal of (. × .) ∪ (. × .). Notice that in these definitions the sets forming the unions are equipotent to the cardinals being added but (thanks to their second factors) are pairwise disjoint.
