Environmental regulation of surface conductance for evaporation from vegetation,on as leaf area index diminishes. The model is also successfully tested by comparison with canopy conductances of emergent trees measured in the .forest. The constraint of vegetation surface conductance and evaporation via environmental regulation by irradiance, air saturation deficit and root zone water supply are discussed.

The basis for variation in leaf longevity of plants,ell as experimental results on various plant species. The theory, which is extended to seasonal environments, is general and applicable to seasonal as well as aseasonal environments. The theory simulated the bimodal geographic distribution of evergreenness.

Factors determining distributions of tree species and plant functional types,ion types was produced and used to estimate the minimal number of vegetation types needed. The resulting set of 40 potential dominant vegetation types may serve as an initial basis for a structural-functionally based set of world plant functional types.
