Recently, my clinical and experimental investigations have revealed opposing facts to the vascular theory. We will present them in detail.

The Biology of the Connective Tissue of the Human Optic Nerve Head, nerve head. We have hypothesized that age-related changes and individual differences in the molecular composition of this tissue may underlie the glaucomatous process and contribute to the degeneration of optic nerve fibers. This chapter will review some of the data that we have presented in support of this hypothesis.

Despite the above definition LTG does not always refer to a single clinical entity, but encompasses various etiologic disorders with unknown causes [7]. The pathogenesis of LTG is poorly understood, however, discrimination of cases may be possible from their clinical course; namely, progressive and stationary [5].
