描述The question of whether or not George Eliot was what would now be called a feminist is a contentious one. This book argues, through a close study of her fiction, informed by examination of her life‘s story and by a comparison of her views to those of contemporary feminists, that George Eliot was more radical and more feminist than commonly thought.

At the same time, in this novel, which interrupted George Eliot’s writing of ., in which Silva is responsible for the harm his rebellion does, George Eliot repudiates the notion that selfless Felix is necessarily responsible for the harm done by his rebellion.

Middlemarch, in the last half of the nineteenth century.. As in ., the heroine ultimately, by rebelling against patriarchy, finds fulfillment in a marriage of equals, but patriarchal sexism in this “dark period” (xv, I:259) defeats her search for a vocation.
