The suitability of evaporites as HLW repositories,thick have been proven. Most of the evaporite deposits under investigation for nuclear waste disposal are, however, much thinner than this though still substantial, such as the 1200 m thick sequence being investigated as part of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Project near Carlsbad in New Mexico [30].

The suitability of crystalline rocks as HLW repositories,ndicative not only of their potential as waste repositories but also of their widespread global distribution. While at the detailed level individual crystalline rock types will differ, the study of the granites can be used to illustrate features common to most crystalline rocks.

Repository options, design and construction, needs to be taken into account in the engineering design. As the previous chapters have shown different rock types have different hydrogeological, thermal and strength characteristics. In consequence any particular repository design will to a large extent be site-and host-rock-specific.
