I argued that there is no need for a notion of global coherence in a relevance-based account, since its work can be done by direct appeal to the notion of relevance. Genre in code-based theories of communications been a growing interest in systemic-functional register and genre theory. In this chapter I want to discuss this theory, asking in particular what it has to say about the functions of genre and their causes.
