Tolerances of Old World bluestems to an acid soil high in exchangeable aluminum 4.1 and limed at pH 5.3. Three strains of weeping lovegrass (.) and El Reno side-oats grama grass (.) were also included as indicators of acid and alkaline soil tolerance, respectively. There were some genetic links between these cultivars, but the genetic background was rather confused, due to uncontrolled intercrossing with other unknown types.

Hydrogen and aluminium tolerancexicity in a number of species and nodulation in clover is more sensitive than growth of the host plant to Al. Decrease in soil pH is associated with significant increases in exchangeable Al. The breeding of Al tolerant wheats in Australia involves a backcross programme utilizing the transfer of tolerance from the Brazilian cultivar Carazinho.
