The measurement of denitrification,ct of fertilizer N on the environment have spurred research on the development of field methods for measurement of denitrification loss (Rolston .. 1976, 1978, Focht 1978, Ryden .. 1978, 1979a,b, Denmead 1979, McKenney .. 1978, Matthias .. 1980).

Micrometeorological methods for measuring gaseous losses of nitrogen in the field,gas at the soil or water surface is calculated from changes in gas concentration in an enclosure placed over the surface; and micrometeorological techniques in which the vertical flux density of the gas is measured in the free air above the surface.

Fate of fertilizer nitrogen applied to wetland rice,ugh food for the vast Asian population. Unfortunately, N fertilizer, which is already a costly input for the rice farmer, is becoming more expensive in response to the rising cost of the oilbased feedstocks used in fertilizer production. It is therefore imperative that N fertilizer is used efficiently.

Chemodenitrification,om soils which are actively nitrifying. The nature of the processes which cause these losses is currently the subject of much investigation and speculation. There is evidence that nitrite produced by nitrifying or denitrifying microorganisms may react chemically to form gaseous N compounds (chemical denitrification).
