The Role of Seizures in Kainic Acid Induced Brain Damageental conditions the distant damage is largely due to the spread of paroxysmal discharge and not to a direct action of the toxin (by diffusion). The usefulness of KA to study the relationship between epilepsy and brain pathology is reviewed and the possible causes of the particular vulnerability of the ammon’s horn to epilepsy is discussed.

Mechanisms of Excitotoxins Examined in Organotypic Cultures of Rat Central Nervous Systemle et al, 1977; Fibiger, 1978). Our studies (Whetsell et al, 1979; Whetsell, 1979; Whetsell and Nicklas, 1980) in organotypic cultures of rat striatum (CA), striatum-plus-frontal cortex (CA-CX) and frontal cortex alone (CX), have demonstrated that the neurotoxic effects of KA can be observed only in CA-CX and CX cultures.

It is involved in energy metabolism and fatty acid synthesis, incorporated into proteins and peptides and is even a precursor for the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. In addition its action as a neuroexcitant has been regarded as universal and non-specific.
