Most astronomers did not accept the impact hypothesis, but videos taken by the Ranger series of lunar impactors demonstrated that the Moon was covered by impact-related craters down to a very small scale.

Pre-Apollo Theories About the Origin of the Moon,tem, was also suggested. All of the theories had drawbacks, and the emerging lunar science community could not agree on any of the three. As the time for the Apollo explorations approached, all hoped that the scientific examination of returned lunar samples would give a firm indication as to the Moon’s origin.

Widening the Research Front,, and papers were given on the implications of this idea for the development of the terrestrial planets, including the Earth-Moon system. In the fall of 1982, conference planners at a meeting in the LPI decided that it was time for a major conference on the origin of the Moon.

Some of the dissenters bolstered their arguments by developing model experiments, showing the effects of impacts of projectiles on various surfaces. Many of the dissenters’ ideas had elements that proved to be accurate.
