The status of studies on South American freshwater food fishes,es are based on riverine fishes, predominantly otophysan characoids and siluroids, with osteoglossids, cichlids, sciaenids and clupeids locally important. Some seventy species, or species groups, are marketed; many of the large species are widely distributed, from the Rio Orinoco to the Rio Paraná.
