Alternative pathway (cyanobacteria to eukaryota)culation. In this chapter we will present evidence that supports the idea that the eukaryotic cell arose by slow gradual change in a prokaryotic cell. This process of arriving at the eukaryotic cell has been termed the ‘Autogenous Theory’ (Klein and Cronquist 1967; Klein 1970; Cavalier-Smith, 1975; Taylor 1976).

The natural history of , (Geitler 1933): past and present perspectives 2–4 at maximum temperature of 57 °C (Doemel 1970) and shows better rates of growth and photosynthesis when cultured with pure CO. (Seckbach .. 1970). It has primitive eukaryotic cellular structure and biochemical traits which made it a suitable candidate for a transitional cell between cyanobacteria and primitive eukaryotic algae.

A review on the taxonomic position of the algal genus , Geitler 1933 and its ecological cohorts , Meefine more precisely the physiological parameters permitting organisms to thrive in moderate to extreme environmental conditions (see Doemel 1970; Brock 1978). These two areas of endeavor are not exclusive of each other, but are mutually complimentary and indivisible.

Nitrogen assimilation in a thermophilic acidophilic alga (Merola .. 1981)] were found to live in thermal acidic habitats up to 57 °C (Doemel and Brock 1970). The family Cyanidiaceae includes the alga .. For a larger spec trum on these algae, see chapters by Seckbach, Ott and by Sentsova in this volume.
