LTR retrotransposons and the evolution of eukaryotic enhancerspose that LTR retroelements and perhaps other retrotransposons constitute drive mechanisms for the evolution of eukaryotic enhancers which can be subsequently distributed throughout host genomes to play a role in regulatory evolution.

Quasispecies in retrotransposons: a role for sequence variability in Tnt1 evolutionlike structure. This population structure gives to Tntl, as in the case of retroviruses, a high sequence plasticity and an adaptive capacity. We propose this adaptivity as the major reason for Tntl maintenance in . genomes and we discuss in this paper the importance of sequence variability for Tntl evolution.

CM-gag, a transposable-like element reiterated in the genome of , mosquitoes, contains only a , gene. the homogeneity of CM-gag copies that are distributed worldwide suggests that they have most probably been amplified recently. Furthermore, selective constraints against amino acid changes have been acting on these sequences, suggesting that they need to encode the gag-like protein to be incorporated into the chromosomes.

Evidence for a host role in regulating the activity of transposable elements in ,: the case of the pransposable elements. Consistent with this conclusion are the properties of Bari 1 elements, which are the only ones of the 14 families tested to be unstable in Charolles stock. Instability is persistent over 53 generations and appears to affect recurrent insertion sites.

The evolution of Ty 1-, group retrotransposons in eukaryote genomesary greatly between these different hosts. We will try to resolve these apparent discrepancies between these properties, explain any fundamental differences in the biology of the Ty1. group between hosts, and propose a general model for LTR retrotransposon evolution.
