Heterostylous Genetic Polymorphisms: Model Systems for Evolutionary Analysis, the stigmas and pollen of floral morphs. Heterostyly is reported from approximately 25 angiosperm families and has usually been viewed as a floral device that promotes outcrossing, hence reducing the harmful effects of close inbreeding in plant populations.

Pollen Competition in Heterostylous Plants,se, pollen competition can be limited to studies of the interactions among pollen grains after deposition on a stigma. Pollen competition in this sense refers strictly to competition between microgametophytes during germination and growth.

Because heterostylous populations consist of two or three hermaphroditic (style length) morphs, there are two sex allocation problems in this system — the optimal allocation to pollen and seed production in each morph and the equilibrium morph ratio.
