Coupled with the sewage arising from the expanding populations these effluents caused a massive deterioration in the quality of many estuaries during the latter half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century.

The Identification and Evaluation of Environmental Quality in Southampton Water, U.K., Using Limite temporally and spatially but such survey levels could not detect more subtle differences or trends. The water quality status of Southampton Water is sufficiently described by such surveys but other studies are required to establish cause and effect relationships.
