描述Error detecting codes are very popular for error control inpractical systems for two reasons. First, such codes can be used toprovide any desired reliability of communication over any noisychannel. Second, implementation is usually much simpler than for asystem using error correcting codes. To consider a particular code foruse in such a system, it is very important to be able to calculate orestimate the probability of undetected error. For the binary symmetricchannel, the probability of undetected error can be expressed in termsof the weight distribution of the code. The first part of the bookgives a detailed description of all known methods to calculate orestimate the probability of undetected error, for the binary symmetricchannel in particular, but a number of other channel models are alsoconsidered. The second part of the book describes a number ofprotocols for feedback communication systems (ARQ systems), withmethods for optimal choice of error detecting codes for the protocols..Results have been collected from many sources and given a unifiedpresentation. The results are presented in a form which make themaccessible to the telecommunication system designer as well as thecodin
