Palgrave Studies in Animals and Literatureent of two or more substances (secondary active transport via carriers). In addition to performing net transepithelial transport, membrane transport proteins can also perform housekeeping functions which regulate the volume and/or internal composition (e.g. pH or calcium concentration) of the epithelial cell.

Sodium and potassium homeostasis provide good examples because transport of these ions into the plasma varies significantly with dietary intake; hence output from the plasma must be adjusted to match input in order to maintain homeostasis.
