The growth and development of the offspring after birth is hindered by undernutrition and promoted by plenty of food.

Three major groups—monotremes, marsupials and placental mammals—exist today, distinguished on many points of anatomy and notably by their modes of reproduction. Some 4200–4500 living species are recognised (Morris, 1965; Harrison Matthews, 1969).

Photoperiodic control of hormones, growth and lactation in cattlenimals schedule reproductive functions, metabolic adjustments, moults and migrations (Ringer, 1980). The focus of this chapter will be to review research on the effects of lighting on some serum hormones which affect growth and lactation in cattle.
