A key observation that motivated the current project is introduced—i.e., that there is a deep conceptual co-determinacy between how we understand mental disorders and how we understand human functioning in general. The chapter structure of the book is then summarized.

It is shown that all perspectives reviewed have different strengths, but that each has clear weaknesses.
