Surface Phenomena,tion, the nematic phase is of great importance from the point of view of applications in electrooptical devices. Thus, in this chapter, we will concentrate on surface properties of nematics, though the properties of the other phases will not be skipped either.

Electrooptical Effects Due to the Uniform Distortion of Nematic Liquid Crystals,ical and electrooptical properties of uniform nematic structures were carried out by Mauguin, Tsvetkov, and Frederiks over 50 years ago [1–4]. Since the beginning of the 1970s these structures have attracted growing interest, as they are the most promising ones for practical applications in Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs).

Modulated and Nonuniform Structures in Nematic Liquid Crystals,lized as regular patterns of black and white stripes (domains) arranged perpendicular to the distortion plane. If the direction of distortion is degenerate in the layer plane, domains form a rectangular, hexagonal, or some other type of lattice, which could periodically transform to each other, i. e., oscillating domain patterns appear.

Before considering these field variations let us give a brief account of the optical properties of cholesteric liquid crystals in the absence of a field.
