One group describes electrostatic phenomena, the other magnetic phenomena. In this chapter we look at the first group, and at the electrostatic fields it describes.

The Variational Finite Element Method: Some Static Applications,The finite element method was presented as a numerical tool in the previous chapter. Here we apply the method to what may be considered classical electromagnetic problems. The understanding of the solution of these important problems may be seen as a natural extension of classical electromagnetism.

,Galerkin’s Residual Method: Applications to Dynamic Fields,For some types of problems, the search of functionals is difficult. For these, other methods, using the finite element technique, were developed. The most commonly used of these is the “Galerkin method.” It is a particular form of the more general “weighted residual” method, whose principles were outlined in Chapter 8.
