Introduction,The Oxford English Dictionary (OED: www.oed.com) defines an ecotone as “A transitional area between two or more distinct ecological communities” and gives the etymology of both “eco” and “tone” as deriving from ancient Greek. The OED goes on to give this first usage by Clements (1904):

Conclusion, Synthesis, and Future DirectionsIn this section I summarize all previous chapters by reviewing what has been said about the Holocene and last ice age, and also about the current structure, function, and dynamics of each of the three general types of ecotones covered. Specific references are to be found back in the original chapters.
