Free radicals and heavy metal tolerance,ted with peroxidation of the root cell membranes, there are no indications that metal toxicity would primarily rely on a disturbance of the cellular radical balance. It is uncertain whether the evolution of metal tolerance involves changes in the capacity of the cellular defence against radicals.

Prolific algal growth may outcompete the aquatic macrophytes by reducing irradiance (Phillips . 1978) and by directly hindering photosynthesis by increasing pH and reducing the CO. content of the water (Simpson & Eaton 1986).
