They have been removed from large areas by the activities of large herbivores and man. A large number of species of epiphytes have evolved to exploit trees as their habitat.

Some taxa have become adapted for wind pollination, and highly specialized for this mode of reproduction (e.g. the grasses).

Adaptive growth forms: the limiting physical environment,t is one aspect of the environment which may be limiting. Some shade adaptations have been described in Chapter 6. Plants adapted to harsh environments are sometimes stressed when placed in what might seem more equable conditions.

Competition, herbivory and dispersal: the limiting biotic environment,n Chapter 7, or adaptations for dispersal to, and establishment in, less competitive areas. An important element of the biotic environment are the animals which exploit the plants. Plants have many adaptations relating to herbivory. The close relationship between animals and flowers has been described in Chapter 5.
