A review of each model is given with an evaluation of its merit and mode-locking features.

The Convergence of Scientific Knowledgecomplex discrete diffraction, as well as Bloch oscillations, arising from the linear properties of such systems. Subsequently, using a generic cubic-quintic nonlinearity, we identify self-localized dissipative discrete soliton solutions, and study their characteristics.

We consider those aspects of the problem that can be studied on the basis of a qualitative analysis of nonlinear systems.

Dissipative Solitons in Pattern-Forming Nonlinear Optical Systems: Cavity Solitons and Feedback SolWe consider such phenomena in driven optical cavities containing a nonlinear medium (cavity solitons) and rather similar phenomena (feedback solitons) where a driven nonlinear optical medium is in front of a single feedback mirror. The history, theory, experimental status, and potential application of such solitons are reviewed.
