Similar replacements of spatial quantity by pairs of planar quantities are needed for other types. For the exterior forms, so-called restrictions to plane are necessary.

Electromagnetism in Space-Time,—its direction determines time axis. In space-time, two field quantities, namely a . . joining the . and . fields, and a . uniting the . and . fields, are sufficient to write down two of Maxwell’s equations with the use of exterior derivatives of differential forms. They are independent of the metric of space-time.

Essential notions, necessary to describe any wave are introduced in Sect. 5.1, namely: a phase, a wave covector and a one-from of slowness as a quantity dual to phase velocity (which can’t be defined uniquely in a metric-free manner).
