描述Astronomical photographs contain an enormous amount ofinformation. This presents extremely interesting problems when onewishes to produce digitised sky atlases, to archive the digitisedmaterial, to develop sophisticated devices to do the digitising, andto create software to procecc the vast amounts of data. All theseactivities are necessary to be able to do astronomy. .One such activity is the important, large-scale optical identificationof objects which also emit radiation at other wavelengths. Otheractivities of the past decade include a multiplicity of surveys thathave been made on galaxies and clusters of galaxies. .This book treats, in five sections, the existing and future surveys,their digitisation and their impact on astronomy. It is a referencefor people in the field and for those who wish to engage in using orproducing sky surveys. .

Preface to the First and Second Edition0 mm., typical astrograph plates (measuring area ≈ 220 × 220 mm.) can be digitised in about 30 minutes. First measuring programs will concentrate on the Hipparcos groundbased extragalactic reference link and various catalogues, in particular remeasurement of AC zones and the AGK2 plates.

The Deep 2-Micron Survey of the Southern Sky in the J (1.25 μm) and K (2.2 μm) bands with a pixel size of 3″. An optical band, I (0.9μm), with a better spatial resolution will be also included. The survey will be done on the 1 meter ESO telescope, with a camera using 256×256 . arrays.

The MAMA Facility: A Survey of Scientific Programmessystematic way by lanes 10.24 mm wide, or in a random access mode from a catalogue of preliminary positions. The basic pixel size (and sampling step) is 10μm. Oversampling down to 2μm can be used to digitise spectra; for some applications, pixels of 20, 30… 80 μm can be synthesized in real time.
