The Principles of Spectrometry,The faint electromagnetic radiation from the Universe, often after collection by a large telescope, is analysed by devices which can generally be called spectrometers. A spectrometer allows the brightness of this radiation to be measured in one or more element of the spectrum from one or more element of the source.

Useful Diffraction Gratings,ccessful production of many accurate replicas from each of several laboriously manufactured master gratings. As well as being made universal in this way diffraction gratings were rendered efficient by blazing. Each of their many grooves is now cut with an inclination to either reflect or refract the light into a useful order of interference.
