Most of the results mentioned here were first presented at a Conference on Approximation Theory held in Oberwolfach from November 16 to 21, 1981 but, due to prolonged illness of the first named author, could not be submitted for publication so far.

Uniqueness of Best L1-Approximations of Continuous Functions, dimensional subspaces in the weighted L.-norm is studied. Characterizations of uniqueness of best approximations are obtained. Various examples of subspaces which guarantee uniqueness, including subspaces of polynomials and linear spline functions of two variables, are presented.
