Marcos Rosenbaum,J. David Vergarae skewness (third-moment) is shown to be a significant contributor to the state-estimates obtained through Bayesian state estimation. Idealized examples, as well as an example in a real tropical cyclone using a state-of-the-art numerical weather prediction model, will be shown.

Fundamental Theories of Physics including Kalman filters, for nonlinear systems. We also review some fundamental concepts on the observability of systems defined by either differential equations or a numerical model. The hope is that some of these ideas will inspire research that can benefit the area of data assimilation.
