Much lower mechanical strength and much higher solubility when in contact with water (particularly if it is flowing or under pressure) determine that these rocks are dubious and hazardous foundations for dams.

At the Frontiers of Everyday LifeKarst evolution in gypsum and anhydrite rocks depends predominantly on the intensity of the dissolution. The process starts slowly by dissolution along narrow discontinuities such as joints and bedding planes and becomes much more intensive when the apertures have been opened enough for flow to become faster and turbulent.
