The maximum optical purities, obtained after repeated precipitation with cyclodextrins followed by fractional crystallization, were 71.5, 84, and 70.2% for sulfoxides, phos-phinates, and sulfmates, respectively.

Improvement by Covalent and Noncovalent Modification, intermediates in covalent catalysis of ester hydrolysis, are very slow, thus preventing cyclodextrins from acting as true catalysts. To accelerate the deacylation step, the addition of amines as nucleophiles were examined.

Phenomenology as Philosophy Sui Generis many organic reactions, in some ways mimicing the action of enzymes. Just as enzymes do not engage in billiard ball chemistry, the cyclodextrins do not engage in billiard ball chemistry (usually). The fact that enzymes can achieve such high rates of reaction indicates that prior complexing followed by reaction must be the chemistry of the future.
