As contributors interrogate the values and meanings behind culinary discourses, they complicate commonplace notions about American identity and question the power structure behind food production and consumption.

Seeing and the Experience of Pictures,use of food to indicate larger themes. Moby-Dick uses culinary rhetoric to establish its analysis of power relations. in the nineteenth century, and a reading of Moby-Dick’s dining scenes supplements the study of the novel’s themes.
