Cryosols in the Russian Arctic Archipelagosated their studies in the 1920s and visited almost all the archipelagos and large islands. These Russian northern islands later were mapped as part of a number of different small-scale soil mapping projects, compiled by extrapolating scarce field data, using remotely sensed images.

The total area of soils affected by permafrost in China is third in the world, after Russia and Canada, but the area of high-altitude perennially frozen soils is the largest in the world.
