Metastable State,twald in 1897 to study phase transitions. It was suggested by X. Huygens and R. Boyle in the second half of the seventeenth century that water and mercury became metastable under low pressure. The physical interpretation of this phenomenon was made by the van der Waals equation, which was proposed in 1873.
